Papers of Lucille E. Hein, a freelance non-fiction writer and former Wisconsin resident, who specialized in writing books for and about children, child-rearing, and religion. Included are printed copies, proposals and outlines, drafts, promotion material, and reviews of books written or edited by Hein, together with magazine articles and other non-fiction writing assignments and correspondence with her family, publishers and employers such as Association Press, Judson Press, the Lutheran Brotherhood Insurance Company, and the YMCA. The processed portion of this collection is summarized above, dates 1938-1981, and is described in the register. Additional accessions date 1949-1994 and are described below.

A child of evangelical Protestantism, the YMCA at first considered itself a specialized agency for bringing young men to Christ. Although the early Y's mission was unabashedly religious in nature, the organization focused on method rather than doctrine or philosophy. Dominated by business men rather than professional religious leaders, the movement tended to emphasize facilities, expansion, practical usefulness, and specific influence.
